{"id":19619,"date":"2023-05-18T13:30:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T17:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/?p=19619"},"modified":"2025-11-19T11:08:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T16:08:18","slug":"promote-positive-experiences-through-community-service-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/blog\/promote-positive-experiences-through-community-service-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Positive childhood experiences through the eyes of a five-year-old child"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row remove_bottom_col_margin=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1763568494471{margin-bottom: 30px !important;}&#8221;]\n<h2>The Four Building Blocks of HOPE through the eyes of a child<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/hope-awarded-a-2022-innovations-in-education-intramural-grant\/\">Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) funded<\/a> the HOPE National Resource Center to create an online course for students during their <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.tufts.edu\/local-global-engagement\/tusm-community\/community-service-learning\">Community Service Learning (CSL)<\/a> experience in Boston\u2019s Chinatown. The new course teaches students how to practice HOPE with an emphasis on the Boston Chinatown community specifically. Co-PIs <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/team-member\/burstein-dina\/\">Dina Burstein, MD, MPH<\/a>, Project Director of the HOPE National Resource Center<\/span> and Allison Stephens, PhD, former Director of Networks and Policy developed the course in collaboration with MyDzung Chu, PhD, MSPH Director of Addressing Disparities in Asian Populations through Translational Research (ADAPT), Chien-Chi Huang, Former Executive Director of Asian Women for Health, Ben Hires, CEO of Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, and TUSM medical students.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a documentary by <a href=\"https:\/\/oliviahuang.yolasite.com\/\">Olivia Huang<\/a> that illustrates how families in the Boston Chinatown community access <a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/blog\/why-pces-are-important-for-all-children-and-families\/\">positive childhood experiences<\/a> (PCEs) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/The-Four-Building-Blocks-of-HOPE-Handout.pdf\">Four Building Blocks of HOPE<\/a>. We learn through the eyes of five-year-old Gabriel, who attends kindergarten at the local Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC) and engages in the community with his family. Follow Gabriel throughout his day, and see how the each Building Block shows up throughout his life and cultural experiences.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpex-responsive-media\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"
