And when they enter the workforce they are using HOPE? &#8211; Lori Clarke, Co-Director, San Diego State University\u2019s Social Policy Institute<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>SDSU\u2019s call to action to become the first HOPE-Informed university<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sdsusocialpolicyinstitute.org\/about\/about-lori-clarke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lori Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-director at San Diego State University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sdsusocialpolicyinstitute.org\/\">Social Policy Institute<\/a> (SPI), remembers the feeling of inspiration when she attended a HOPE <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">network community meeting in spring of 2023, where the HOPE National Resource Center&#8217;s Director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/team-member\/0-sege-robert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Sege, MD, PhD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spoke to professionals from children and family-serving organizations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the end of the meeting, Dr. Sege made a call to action. He asked the attendees what they were going to do now that they\u2019d learned about the HOPE framework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Clarke, the answer was clear. She wanted to make San Diego State University (SDSU) the first HOPE-Informed University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t it be cool if students come to campus, adopt the HOPE framework\u2026.and when they become parents they are introducing their children to the framework of HOPE? And when they enter the workforce they are using the HOPE framework?&#8221; says Clarke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarke\u2019s enthusiasm is connected to SPI\u2019s vision that everyone across the lifespan is safe, educated, healthy and well, with a sense of belonging, purpose and opportunity to achieve their aspirations. The Institute supports a range of different partners \u2014 government, direct service organizations, and the university itself \u2014 in thinking through the holistic wellbeing of their constituents. Since the HOPE framework focuses on the needs of a whole person, and the various community and environmental factors that can make a person well, SPI took to it immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sdsusocialpolicyinstitute.org\/about\/about-yvonne-epps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yvonne Epps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, SPI project manager and one of the spearheaders of the project, also sees the potential for the HOPE framework&#8217;s ripple effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Even though the framework is geared towards early childhood, children, and families,\u201d she says, \u201cwe saw that there was opportunity to really expand that to include older adults, to include college students\u2026because everyone deserves to have access to those healthy to those positive experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming a HOPE-Informed university is new terrain for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no playbook for bringing the HOPE framework to a college campus. So we&#8217;re just trying to figure it out. That&#8217;s \u2026 fun and exciting,\u201d says Epps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/train-with-us\/certification-programs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HOPE-certified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is certainly one element, but SPI\u2019s vision extends beyond that. They\u2019ve outlined a 10-year plan to integrate the HOPE framework across the university system \u2014 academics, student services, personnel \u2014 to improve the mental health of its community. Epps says the need for a broad scale intervention is particularly high because of the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26131\" style=\"width: 707px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26131\" src=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-26-at-11.27.16-AM-300x162.png\" alt=\"10 year plan for SDSU HOPE-Informed University project.\" width=\"707\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-26-at-11.27.16-AM-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-26-at-11.27.16-AM-1024x554.png 1024w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Screenshot-2024-08-26-at-11.27.16-AM-1536x831.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic by Social Policy Institute at San Diego State University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing really high rates of students who are experiencing mental health issues and crises \u2026 seeing students who aren&#8217;t doing as well in their programs as we have seen in years past.\u201d She adds that faculty and staff \u201care feeling like they have to play multiple roles, not just as teachers but as support for their students as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1758515770609{margin-bottom: 30px !important;}&#8221;]\n<h2><b>Integrating HOPE at San Diego State<\/b><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>I think that the HOPE framework really lets us use what students need in all their different identities and kind of unite those needs, under the [Four] Building Blocks [of HOPE]. &#8211; Jakob Schmall, Program Coordinator, SPI<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Reviewing the offerings<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HOPE framework is centered around the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/resource\/the-four-building-block-of-hope\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Building Blocks of HOPE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are safe and supportive relationships; safe, stable, and equitable environments; opportunities for social and community engagement; and opportunities for emotional growth. SPI\u2019s first task in integrating the HOPE framework was looking at what resources the university already has, through the lens of these four categories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPI defines university resources broadly: They range from standard mental health services to campus cultural events and opportunities for engaging in civic life. They can be identity-specific, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sacd.sdsu.edu\/pride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pride Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which provides an inclusive and affirming gathering space for individuals of all sexual and gender orientations and their allies. They can be as tangible as a physical building, or as intangible as an online community space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the HOPE framework for asset mapping is like putting on a pair of glasses that allows you to see everything with the question: What Building Block(s) does this resource offer?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SPI team, along with the support of a \u201cGuide Team\u201d of SDSU students, faculty, and community partners, spent a summer doing macro-level asset mapping and connecting with partners across San Diego who are engaging with the HOPE Framework. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdsusocialpolicyinstitute.org\/about\/about-jakob-schmall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jakob Schmall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, SPI program coordinator, says the HOPE framework works for asset mapping because it helps them think about the needs of the various demographics on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think that the HOPE framework really lets us use what students need in all their different identities and kind of unite those needs, under the Building Blocks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One example of an intersectional identity that asset mapping brought to Epps\u2019 and Schmall\u2019s attention is SDSU students who are also parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There wasn&#8217;t anything [on campus] specific for SDSU students who are parents. We do have\u2026 the Children&#8217;s Center and we also have lactation rooms. But it&#8217;d be interesting to explore with [student] parents at SDSU, what else do they need?\u201d Epps says, \u201cAre there certain areas of the Four Building Blocks that we can really build upon to help them feel like they are able to, like really thrive while they&#8217;re going to school?\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1758515874244{margin-bottom: 30px !important;}&#8221;]\n<h3><b>The HOPE framework in daily life<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that the first stage of asset mapping is complete, SPI is able to pilot the introduction of new mental health resources at SDSU. This fall, <a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/train-with-us\/certification-programs\/hope-champion-certification\/\">HOPE Champion <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Alcaide will be supporting social work professor Shelly Paule to test out classroom interventions that will cover all Four Building Blocks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the full plan is yet to be developed, one example of a HOPE intervention being considered for the classroom is creating time and space for the professor to have conversations with the students that aren&#8217;t exclusively about academics. Epps describes it as a \u201ccheck-in,\u201d something that can be as brief as \u201cHow are you doing today? Is there anything that you need for me before class begins?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot, which will be designed with student input, will include one class that utilizes HOPE interventions and one class, the control, that doesn\u2019t. Surveys will be performed at the beginning and end of the semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schmall says that making professor-student interactions feel more supportive and safe is a \u201cmind shift that has to happen.\u201d\u00a0 Check-ins are a way for professors to acknowledge the range of things that students are dealing with \u201cthat might come in between them \u2026 being able to complete all their tasks on time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the mental health needs of the university are so high, SPI feels it\u2019s not realistic to designate supportive relationships only to formal counselors. Epps says that professors and student services staff are often on the front line in interacting with students, and they need to be equipped with tools to provide support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epps says SPI will move on to more targeted asset mapping this year, continuing to engage students in the process and honing in on specific colleges and departments within the university, like the School of Social Work, to do more pilots.
