{"id":27976,"date":"2025-02-26T09:46:30","date_gmt":"2025-02-26T14:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/?p=27976"},"modified":"2025-09-22T00:20:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T04:20:54","slug":"pces-over-time-positive-childhood-experiences-in-caregivers-may-support-the-development-of-the-children-they-care-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/blog\/pces-over-time-positive-childhood-experiences-in-caregivers-may-support-the-development-of-the-children-they-care-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Positive childhood experiences in caregivers may support the development of the children they care for"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row remove_bottom_col_margin=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2>Can the effects of PCEs span across multiple generations?<\/h2>\n<p>The HOPE framework emphasizes the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/blog\/why-pces-are-important-for-all-children-and-families\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive childhood experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PCEs) for healthy child development. When should those experiences start? In the spirit of the HOPE framework, Dartmouth public health master\u2019s student Jessica Leishman is helping us look backwards in time at the childhood experiences of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caregivers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see what that can teach us about the chances for resiliency in future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35289215\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Existing research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that ACEs experienced by caregivers contribute to delays in social-emotional development in toddlers, because they put those parents at higher risk for substance use disorders and mental health conditions that impact their parenting. The children they raise can experience higher rates of anxiety, difficulty adapting to different environments, and social changes as a result. But what happens when PCEs come into play?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to see if PCEs had that same intergenerational aspect that ACEs do,\u201d said Leishman. \u201cSay that same person with the parental abuse and neglect also had PCEs\u2026 say they had a couple of non-parent adults who took genuine interest in them\u2026 does that protective factor that protects the parent \u2026 also travel through and protect the children as well?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2>Understanding resilience in young children based on their caregiver\u2019s exposure to PCEs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, Leishman and her team of RJ Gillespie, MD, and David Maher, MPH, launched a study out of the Children\u2019s Clinic in Portland, Oregon. This clinic collects caregiver ACEs and PCEs screenings when the child is four months. At six months and at 15 months, the clinic collects the social-emotional health information on the children, using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsmedicine.org\/medical-professionals-trainees\/academic-departments\/department-pediatrics\/survey-well-being-young-children\/parts-swyc\/swyc-bpsc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Pediatric Symptom Checklist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which looks at indicators like how well a child is able to interact with others, how flexible they are in social situations, or how able they are to calm down when they experience anxiety. Leishman\u2019s team looked at a sample of 836 caregiver-child pairs (pairings of 1-2 caregivers and their child) to see if PCEs in the caregivers correlated with any changes in social-emotional development in the child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found that children whose caregivers had a higher exposure to PCEs were more likely to show social-emotional improvements between six and 15 months than children whose parents had fewer PCEs. Improvements might be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a child becoming more comfortable with changes in routine, being able to better regulate emotions or responding more positively to new situations or people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This supports the hypothesis that caregiver PCEs do have an impact on the next generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they looked at caregivers with higher exposure to ACEs, the data suggested that the children were more likely to stay the same instead of worsen (more difficulty regulating emotions or adapting) or improve, but more research is needed to confirm this conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27987 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster.png\" alt=\"Research poster of Are PCEs Intergenerational poster\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster.png 1600w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Are-PCEs-Intergenerational-poster-1536x1152.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2>Potential further research on the intergenerational effects of PCEs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[We] view this study as a starting point \u2026 because there&#8217;s really not a lot of research on the effect of parental PCEs,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leishman noted that in addition to caregiver PCEs, the study looked at other factors that could affect child development. These included race and socioeconomic background. But because of the makeup of the cohort, which was relatively homogeneous, they were not able to say in a definitive way that demographic factors played into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would love to look deeper into \u2026 which ACEs and PCEs are more influential upon social-emotional development? Are there larger influence factors that are related to health insurance level, race or ethnicity?\u201d said Leishman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leishman will be presenting this research at the Master of Public Health program of March 2025 at Dartmouth College and will likely be pursuing publication in the fall of 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does the HOPE framework look like in your work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have an amazing story to share on how you are using the HOPE framework in your work with children and families?
