They do this by strengthening their own capacities and those of their communities through educational programs, professional volunteer work, community projects, and collaborative efforts with local organizations and strategic partners. Their goal is clear: to create opportunities for every child and adolescent to fully develop and exercise their rights.

Along this path, positive childhood experiences (PCEs) have evolved from being a valuable resource to becoming a central pillar of América Solidaria Chile’s institutional strategy.

Magdalena Valdés has been a key figure in driving this transformation. With a distinguished track record in social impact evaluation, she served as Executive Director of América Solidaria Chile for five years before co-founding Lambda Consulting, a firm specializing in sustainability and impact measurement for organizations and companies.

Today, part of the continuity of this vision at América Solidaria Chile is led by the organization ‘s new Executive Director, Ignacia Salas, and its Social Director, María Constanza Hernández. In their roles, they coordinate the team that works closely with communities and organizations to strengthen capacities and generate sustainable change.

From different stages of leadership, both have helped the HOPE framework become a strategic, measurable, and replicable tool capable of inspiring other organizations.

“Positive experiences can not only prevent; they also have the potential to heal. They are a way to structure care, and if we apply them intentionally, we can generate significant change.” — Magdalena Valdés

From Impact Evaluation to Socioemotional Action

Magdalena joined América Solidaria with extensive experience in impact evaluation, after leading the regional office of J-PAL (Poverty Action Lab – MIT). From that position, she saw the need for socioemotional aspects to be addressed with the same rigor as other indicators.

“I find it difficult to communicate based solely on conviction. I prefer that what we say is backed by evidence,” she says.

From that premise, she and her team designed a measurement system for their interventions with three objectives:

I Can — Self-efficacy and self-esteem.

I Belong — Sense of belonging and identity.

I Act — Capacity for agency.

The focus on PCEs, and later HOPE, was integrated as a framework that provided structure and coherence to this measurement. “HOPE didn’t give me an evaluation formula, but it did provide a clear, easy-to-understand method with the power to shift perspectives and create a shared language,” she adds.

Making the Often Overlooked Visible

For Magdalena, positive experiences are not a minor addition: “Actions like painting a school or having a volunteer believe in a student may seem small, but they often have a profound impact on how that child perceives themselves.”

Her goal was to ensure that such interventions did not go unnoticed and that their direct impact on the socioemotional development of children and adolescents was understood.

HOPE in Practice: From Concept to Methodology

The arrival of the HOPE framework about three years ago converged with the need for a comprehensible and replicable structure to enhance their work with children and adolescents. Under Magdalena’s leadership, HOPE was incorporated into programs such as Accionadores and Design for Change, adapting it to the local reality and ensuring it was integrated into volunteer training and the structure of each project.

“All programs measure these three points —I Can, I Belong, I Act— and use the HOPE framework as part of their training. This allows us to maintain a consistent thread in our socioemotional work.”

Programs like Accionadores and Design for Change have been key to bringing the HOPE framework into everyday practice. In Accionadores, volunteers work for a semester during school advisory periods, delivering a series of workshops that guide students through a journey that begins with I Can, continues with I Belong, and culminates in I Act, helping adolescents recognize themselves, strengthen their sense of belonging, and feel capable of driving change in their communities. In Design for Change, the methodology is adapted to school contexts and implemented both in person and online, supporting teachers and students in a creative and participatory process where each stage generates PCEs aligned with the Four Building Blocks of HOPE.

For María Constanza, the HOPE framework is present not only in the activities carried out but from the very conception of projects to the way they interact with counterparts and communities.

“We went from believing in socioemotional impact to having a technical foundation. We incorporate HOPE’s pillars into everything: from project design to community relationships. And we train local partners so they themselves become promoters of positive experiences.”

The impact is significant: last year, they reached more than 9,000 children and adolescents; this year, the goal is to exceed 12,000 direct beneficiaries.

Adolescence: A Key Stage for Writing a Different Future

At América Solidaria, this work takes on special relevance during adolescence — a stage in which, according to science, the brain undergoes a unique process of plasticity and neural reorganization that opens a window of opportunity for lasting change.

“The future of adolescents is not written. If we can ensure they have healthy relationships, opportunities, and meaningful experiences, we can help them make decisions that set them on a different path,” says María Constanza.

Under this premise, the foundation launched the campaign “DESTINATION: The Future of Adolescents is NOT Written”, which combines scientific evidence and social action to show that this stage should not be seen as a problem, but as an opportunity to:

Develop emotional intelligence and self-control.

Channel curiosity into meaningful learning.

Strengthen support networks and relationships with significant adults.

“If I start by telling you that I don’t believe in you, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Focusing on what they can achieve allows them to flourish.” — María Constanza Hernández

More Than Prevention: An Approach with Healing Potential

Magdalena proposes broadening the understanding of positive experiences: “They should not be seen only as a preventive element. They can also be part of emotional recovery processes, even in contexts of high vulnerability.”

This perspective has guided América Solidaria in designing activities that strengthen skills and relationships, not only to prevent risks but also to support healing processes.

Shaping the Future with a Lasting Framework

Her vision for HOPE at América Solidaria is clear: “I would like the approach to be systematically embedded, regardless of who is in charge. I also believe that certification backed by evidence and academia could motivate more organizations to implement it.”

María Constanza adds that she would like other countries where América Solidaria operates to move forward together toward HOPE framework certification, leveraging the shared language and cultural similarities.

An Invitation to Join

América Solidaria’s experience with HOPE shows that it is possible to integrate this approach into any type of organization. The journey can begin with training in the framework, incorporating its building blocks into planning and impact measurement, and then sharing learnings and strengthening a network of actors committed to this vision.

“Join the movement. HOPE is more than a framework: it’s a paradigm shift. And if we all believe in it, we will evolve.” — Magdalena Valdés

In the words of María Constanza: “Let’s pollinate the concept of positive experiences into everything we do. From social intervention to public policy, we must look at children, adolescents, and families with more appreciation and compassion.”

The invitation is open: joining HOPE means embracing a renewed way of supporting and strengthening childhood and adolescence.

To learn more about América Solidaria Chile’s programs, campaigns, and collaboration opportunities, visit their official website (www.americasolidaria.cl).
