La <\/span><b>Coalici\u00f3n EASTIE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">East Boston Alliance for Support, Treatment, Intervention, and Education<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) es una coalici\u00f3n comunitaria intersectorial enfocada en prevenir y reducir el consumo de sustancias a trav\u00e9s del liderazgo juvenil, la construcci\u00f3n de comunidad y la promoci\u00f3n de estilos de vida saludables. Estas capacitaciones se realizaron de forma biling\u00fce, asegurando que tanto l\u00edderes angloparlantes como hispanohablantes pudieran comprender y aplicar los principios de HOPE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cComenzamos con talleres de HOPE 101, y poco a poco las organizaciones hicieron suyo el marco,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explic\u00f3 Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLo hermoso es que no fue solo teor\u00eda, sino pr\u00e1ctica. Juntos analizamos c\u00f3mo nuestras acciones diarias pod\u00edan convertirse en experiencias positivas para los j\u00f3venes y sus familias.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Este proceso compartido ayud\u00f3 a la coalici\u00f3n a <\/span><b>desarrollar un lenguaje com\u00fan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> y una <\/span><b>visi\u00f3n unificada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Con el tiempo, HOPE dej\u00f3 de ser un modelo externo y se convirti\u00f3 en una parte integral de la cultura de la coalici\u00f3n y de las comunidades a las que sirve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HOPE en acci\u00f3n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00bfC\u00f3mo se ve esto en la pr\u00e1ctica? La Coalici\u00f3n EASTIE integra los cuatro bloques fundamentales de HOPE en la gran mayor\u00eda de sus programas, aqu\u00ed hay algunos ejemplos:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Relaciones positivas y de confianza:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> En el taller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, los j\u00f3venes aprenden c\u00f3mo se ven las relaciones saludables.. Adultos de confianza \u2014mentores, cl\u00ednicos, maestros\u2014 participan activamente en el trabajo.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNo estamos aqu\u00ed para culpar o avergonzar,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dijo Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLa gente quiere sentirse mejor. Sabemos que hay mejores maneras de sentirse mejor que perduran.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Entornos seguros, estables y equitativos:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Los j\u00f3venes y el equipo mapean \u201cespacios protectores\u201d en el vecindario: lugares donde vivir, aprender y jugar de manera segura. Luego, usan esos mapas para organizar eventos familiares. Por ejemplo, un parque que antes era conocido como un lugar de consumo de sustancias ahora alberga <\/span><b>noches de cine, m\u00fasica y eventos de micr\u00f3fono abierto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNuestros j\u00f3venes identificaron el parque como un lugar que quer\u00edan hacer acogedor para todos,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explic\u00f3 Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTambi\u00e9n han invitado a vecinos a participar que enfrentan adicciones, ofreci\u00e9ndoles formas de participar que honran su dignidad.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Participaci\u00f3n c\u00edvica y social:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Un grupo creciente de l\u00edderes juveniles \u2014muchos de ellos en el <\/span><b>Grupo de Liderazgo en Espa\u00f1ol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 est\u00e1n tomando la iniciativa en la prevenci\u00f3n del consumo de sustancias. Hablan en reuniones municipales, se relacionan con funcionarios p\u00fablicos y realizan campa\u00f1as de prevenci\u00f3n entre pares que reflejan su cultura e idioma.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEn este momento, nuestros l\u00edderes juveniles son las estrellas de la Coalici\u00f3n EASTIE,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dijo Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSe han convertido en la cara y la voz de nuestro trabajo.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Crecimiento emocional:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> La coalici\u00f3n colabora con la comunidad y otras organizaciones para promover estrategias de respuesta saludables cuando existe trauma.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEl trauma puede ser la droga de entrada,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reflexion\u00f3 Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLas personas con traumas no resueltos recurren a sustancias para sobrellevarlos. HOPE nos ofrece formas de sanar, brindando experiencias positivas que reconectan a los j\u00f3venes con la comunidad.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>De la sanci\u00f3n a la transformaci\u00f3n:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El enfoque de la coalici\u00f3n es <\/span><b>deliberadamente enfocado en las fortalezas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Cuando un joven es sorprendido consumiendo sustancias, el objetivo no es excluirlo, sino <\/span><b>reconectarlo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cD\u00e9mosles la oportunidad de sentir que pertenecen, que su voz importa, que pueden estar al servicio de la comunidad,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dijo Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cConectalos con un adulto de confianza o con un grupo positivo de pares. Al hacerlo, la diferencia en lo que sucede despu\u00e9s es enorme.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los padres tambi\u00e9n forman parte de esta historia. En el programa <\/span><b>Tejiendo Resiliencia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, los cuidadores se re\u00fanen con un terapeuta-facilitador para practicar comunicaci\u00f3n y autocuidado mientras aprenden nuevas puntadas en sus tejidos. \u00bfSe te escap\u00f3 una puntada? Empieza de nuevo.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEl tejido se convierte en una met\u00e1fora de la vida,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> afirm\u00f3 Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLa resiliencia es algo que construimos juntos.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El acceso al idioma es <\/span><b>fundamental<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> en su trabajo. La coalici\u00f3n traduce y co-crea materiales de prevenci\u00f3n junto a los j\u00f3venes, asegurando que los ejemplos y actividades tengan sentido cultural y ling\u00fc\u00edstico.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEliminamos la barrera ling\u00fc\u00edstica,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dijo Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLos j\u00f3venes reci\u00e9n llegados con ingl\u00e9s limitado ya no son espectadores; son campeones de la prevenci\u00f3n.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Todas las reuniones de la coalici\u00f3n son biling\u00fces y cuentan con interpretaci\u00f3n.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCuando el contenido refleja experiencias reales y cercanas, la participaci\u00f3n aumenta.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Construyendo un movimiento<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La Coalici\u00f3n EASTIE es convocante, no un programa \u00fanico. Trimestralmente, re\u00fane a escuelas, organizaciones juveniles, proveedores de salud y salud mental, servicios de recuperaci\u00f3n, servicios sociales y grupos de la sociedad civil para alinear esfuerzos y fortalecer el acceso a los cuatro bloques fundamentales de HOPE.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSe necesita a toda una comunidad,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dijo Nancy. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLa prevenci\u00f3n no es trabajo de una sola escuela o cl\u00ednica; es un proyecto comunitario.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El momento actual no est\u00e1 libre de desaf\u00edos. La financiaci\u00f3n para la prevenci\u00f3n fluct\u00faa, y el futuro puede sentirse incierto. El marco HOPE es accesible para todos. Practicar HOPE es algo que cualquiera puede hacer.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nancy desaf\u00eda la idea de que los adolescentes est\u00e9n desconectados o sean parte del problema. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastiecoalition.org\/\">EASTIE Coalition<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (East Boston Alliance for Support, Treatment, Intervention, and Education) is a cross-sectoral community coalition focused on preventing and reducing substance misuse through youth leadership, community building, and healthy lifestyles. They are reimagining prevention as a community habit, and in doing so, helping young people lead the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the coalition\u2019s helm is <\/span>Nancy Slamet<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an experienced program manager, educator, and community builder. She discovered the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) framework<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0while searching for a strengths-based alternative to traditional, problem-focused approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCEs can mitigate ACEs. The HOPE framework affirmed what we were already doing\u2014and sharpened our focus.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span>Nancy Slamet<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director, EASTIE Coalition<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2><b>The process of incorporating HOPE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing the HOPE framework into the coalition\u2019s work was a gradual, collective journey. Nancy and her team began with internal learning sessions, exploring how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/positiveexperience.org\/resource\/the-four-building-block-of-hope\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Building Blocks of HOPE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be applied to their daily work. They then organized trainings and workshops for community partners, including schools, youth-serving organizations, and health providers. These trainings were conducted bilingually to ensure that both English- and Spanish-speaking leaders could understand and apply HOPE principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started with HOPE 101 workshops, and little by little the organizations began to make the framework their own,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy explained. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe beautiful thing is that it wasn\u2019t just theory\u2014it was practice. Together, we examined how our daily actions could become positive experiences for young people and their families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shared process helped the coalition develop a <\/span>common language<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span>unified vision<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over time, the HOPE framework became more than just an external model\u2014it became an integral part of the coalition\u2019s culture and the communities they serve.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2><b>HOPE in Action<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does that look like on the ground? The EASTIE Coalition integrates Four Building Blocks of HOPE into every program. Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Positive, trusting relationships<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Love&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> workshop, youth learn what healthy relationships look like and how to recognize harm. Trusted adults\u2014mentors, clinicians, teachers\u2014are intentionally woven into the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re not here to blame or shame,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople want to feel better. We know there are better ways to feel better that last.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Safe, stable, and equitable environments<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth and the team map \u201cprotective spaces\u201d around the neighborhood\u2014places to live, learn, and play safely\u2014and then use those maps to organize family-friendly gatherings. For example, a park once known as a hub for substance use now hosts movie nights, music, and open mic events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur youth identified the park as a place they wanted to make welcoming for all,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy explained. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey also welcome neighbors facing addiction, inviting them to join in ways that honor their dignity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Civic and social participation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A growing cohort of youth leaders\u2014many of them in the <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/span><strong>Spanish Leadership Group&#8221;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are taking the lead in preventing substance use. They speak at municipal meetings, engage public officials, and design peer-to-peer prevention campaigns that reflect their culture and language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now, our youth leaders are the shining stars of the EASTIE Coalition,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019ve become the face and the voice of our work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Emotional growth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coalition partners with the community and other organizations to promote healthy coping strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrauma can be the gateway drug,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy reflected. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople with unhealed trauma turn to substances to cope. HOPE gives us ways to heal\u2014by offering positive experiences that reconnect young people to the community.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2><b>Beyond Punishment: A Restorative Approach<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coalition\u2019s approach is deliberately <\/span>restorative<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When a young person is caught using substances, the goal isn\u2019t to exclude them; it\u2019s to reconnect them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s give them an opportunity to feel a sense of belonging, that their voice matters, that they can be of service,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConnect them to a trusted adult or a positive peer group. By doing so, there is a world of difference in what happens next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents are part of the story, too. In their program Knitting Resilience, caregivers gather with a therapist-facilitator to practice communication and self-care while learning new stitches. Dropped one? Start again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe knitting becomes a metaphor for life,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy stated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cResilience is something we make together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language access is integral to their work. The coalition translates and co-creates prevention curricula with youth so that examples and activities resonate culturally and linguistically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe removed the linguistic barrier,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNewcomer youth with limited English are no longer bystanders\u2014they\u2019re champions of prevention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All coalition meetings are bilingual with interpretation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the content resonates with real-life experiences, engagement rises.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<h2><b>Building a Movement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EASTIE Coalition is a <\/span>convener<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014not a single program. Quarterly, it brings together schools, youth-serving organizations, health and mental health providers, recovery services, social services, and civil society groups to align efforts and strengthen access to HOPE\u2019s four building blocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt takes a village,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrevention isn\u2019t the job of one school or one clinic; it\u2019s a community project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment is not without challenges. Funding for prevention fluctuates, and the future can feel uncertain. But the coalition\u2019s spirit runs deeper than any single budget line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe point of a coalition is that it doesn\u2019t live in any one organization,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nancy affirmed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we can\u2019t always turn to institutions, we can turn to one another. The HOPE framework is accessible to all. Practicing HOPE is something everyone can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nancy challenges the notion that adolescents are disconnected or part of the problem. She believes they hold deep insight into their own realities\u2014and the solutions as well. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her message is powerful:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust listen to them. They understand their reality better than we do\u2014and they have strong ideas for solutions.
